Reviews 3-10-08

  • Penance-Relentless 05 8.5/10
  • Midnighter 017 8/10
  • Raven 7/10 The cover of this issue may be the most accurate one I've ever seen. Let me explain. Seeing that Raven is finally getting her own series written by Marv Wolfman no less had the fanboy in me fondly reflecting on memories of The New Teen Titans, but at the same time the tagline refering to this as Raven's "own emo series" filled me with the deepest of dreads, and my mixed feeling stayed with me throughout the issue. Raven using her powers to solve a murder before it happens: Sounds good. Cutesy manga-influenced art style: Horrible. A secret paramilitary organization: Always a plus. Raven being cast as the cliche high school misfit when there is really no reason for her being in high school in the first place: Awful. Psycho Pirate's Medusa Mask being used to alter the emotions by said paramilitary organization: Awesome. The end result is a comic with enough wrong with it to make me drop the series, but with enough good stuff to make me want to kepp reading and see where it goes.
  • Young Liars 01 9/10 With Phonogram, Suburban Glamour, and Vinyl Underground (among others) it seems that seems that the comics industry has been going after the indie crowd hard lately. Young Liars is the latest series of the trend and like the above mentioned series, it's a cool comic that makes a great read. It almost even makes up for the total lack of Stray Bullets over the past few years.
  • Vinyl Underground 06 9/10 Speaking of Vinyl Underground, a new arc starts this issue, and from the looks of it the series is gonna keep going strong as The Mod Squad Vertigo style. Seriously, if you're not already read it, this is a great series to add to your reading list.
  • Detective Comics 842 6/10 Somehow a story about Batman's clothes isn't that good.
  • Powers 028 8.5/10
  • Scalped 015 8.5/10
  • Jonah Hex 029 8/10
